Canadian Screen Awards

DCHP-2 (Jun 2016)
n. Entertainment

awards celebrating excellence in Canadian film, television and digital media productions.

Type: 1. Origin The Canadian Screen Awards were first announced by the Academy of Canadian Cinema and Television in 2012 (see the quotation) and are presented annually to celebrate talent in Canadian film, television and digital media (see ACCT reference). The Awards, also known as Screenies, are a recent amalgamation of the Genie and Gemini Awards, which for decades had honoured excellence in Canadian cinema and television, respectively (see Canadian Encyclopedia, s.v. "Canadian Screen Awards"). Because of the traditionally anglocentric focus of the Awards, separate ceremonies -- the Jutra Awards and the Prix Gémeaux -- were established to recognize achievements in French-language film and programming (see Canadian Encyclopedia, s.v. "Gala du cinéma québécois"). As with other famous awards like the Emmys or the Junos, the terms Canadian Screen Awards and Screenies may refer either to the ceremony or the awards themselves.
See Screenies for the shortened form of the term.

Quotations

2012
The new Canadian prizes for film, television and digital media will be known as the Canadian Screen Awards, the Academy of Canadian Cinema and Television announced today. [...] The academy announced earlier this year that the Genie Awards for Canadian English-language film and the Geminis for Canadian TV would be combined. The decision came after extensive consultation with the film and television industries. A new logo that will be reflected in the winning statuette was also unveiled Tuesday in Toronto. The awards will be extended to digital media – though the academy did not specify how it would approach cellphone or internet video.
2013
There are still nominations for TV shows that got cancelled after one season; there are still nominations for films that few Canadians have heard of let alone seen, but the new Genie-Gemini awards mash-up aims to give the domestic screen industry some badly needed red-carpet glamour. The nominations for the first-ever Canadian Screen Awards were announced at simultaneous press conferences in Toronto and Montreal Tuesday. The prize winners in a contest that amalgamates the Genie film awards and the Gemini television and digital-media awards will be announced during a live broadcast hosted by comedian Martin Short on March 3 on CBC-TV.
2014
Joining Enemy at the top of the nominations list are Tom at the Farm, the latest from Xavier Dolan, with eight, Gabrielle, Louise Archambault's story of a special-needs romance, garnered six nods including best actress for Gabrielle Marion-Rivard, and Maina, a story of Innu confrontation from Michel Poulette, netted six chances for a new Canadian Screen Awards statuette.
2015
The series turned out great; the life transformation that occurred with the participants was significant. Canada's version of the Oscars and the Emmys is called the Canadian Screen Awards. Our series was nominated for best editing; this was a huge honour and accomplishment for our little company on the East Coast of Canada.
